GOONVEAN Ltd

KAOLIN FOR ANIMAL FEED

GOONVEAN Ltd

Goonvean Ltd is a privately owned company established in 1931. Turnover is 20m and we employ 160 people. We manufacture and sell approx. 200,000 tonnes per annum kaolin from 5 different quarries located near St. Austell in Cornwall. Approximately 95% of our sales are overseas, mostly to the Middle East, Far East and Scandinavia. We have a small lots distributor in Bury with storage facilities.

The bulk of our sales are into the paper and ceramic industries but we are committed to move towards more speciality markets such as animal feed, paints, coatings, dyes, adhesives, plastics, etc

We own some very pure deposits which contain zero dioxins/furans and very low levels of bacteria and heavy metals. We have managed ... to capitalise on this by selling into the pharmaceutical industry for human and veterinary medicines and are now the worlds leading supplier of British Pharmacopoeia Light Kaolin, with regular sales to Boots, GSK, Sanofi Aventis, Wyeth and others, who use our kaolin in preparations for stomach upsets, as a suspending aid in cough mixtures and for kaolin poultices, etc.

We have substantial sales to a major enzyme producer where Opal Sigma kaolin is used to bind and coat the enzymes which are eventually sold into the animal feed industry. Opal Sigma is approved to Food Chemicals Codex, part of the FDA.

We also sell a large range of aggregates which includes grouse and turkey grit and we are able to produce finer grits, eg for chickens, should there be a demand.

FEMAS

Goonvean Ltd is the only kaolin supplier approved to FEMAS for sales of kaolin as a binder.

MYCOTOXIN REMOVAL

We have been selling our Opal sigma grade for some years now as an animal feed supplement, for mycotoxin removal and have the following evidence:

1.It will chemically combine (irreversibly) with Aflotoxins due to the negative charge on the kaolin plates
2.It will also remove Ochratoxins and Fusarium toxins. We believe this is probably due to the mineralogy of Opal Sigma which includes a small percentage of montmorillonite, which is intergrown with kaolinite to form a mixed layer *val is thought to be by absorption into the lattice which swells in aqueous media. Koalin of this kind is unique to Goonvean, worldwide.
3.It does not remove nutrients such as vitamins which we believe is a problem with some other minerals such as bentonite
4.Addition rate is 0.1 to 0.25%

The evidence above is being used as proof of efficacy in an authorisatin dossier being written for EFSA, for the use of kaolin (E559) for mycotoxin removal. Alex Newns, our Process Manager, is a member of a European Working Group who expects that the dossier will be completed in advance of the November 2010 deadline. We are also involved in ensuring that kaolin is successfully reauthorized for use as a binder.

BINDER

We have recently conducted trials at a large animal feed producer replacing guar gum with grade SCD.08.05 kaolin as a binder. The results proved that kaolin can work effectively as a binder at addition rates of 1.5 to 2.0% and that it has water absorbing properties. Measurement of binding efficiency was by Holman fines tester.

PROCESS AID

The above trials provided an unexpected bonus in that pellet extrusion rate (cubing process) increased by 20 to 25% when using kaolin, with no increase in electrical output to the extruder motor. Addition levels were between 1.0 and 2.0%. We believe that kaolin acts as a lubricant during passage through the die IFICATIONS

We have developed SCD.08.05 for use as a binder following our FEMAS approval last year. SCD.08.05 is coarser in particle sizing than Opal Sigma and is therefore less expensive to produce.
Mineralogy has been measured by X.R.D. and this confirms that it is very similar to Opal Sigma i.e. similar proportions of kaolinite and montmorillonite, which means that mycotoxin absorption capability will be similar

SUMMARY

The use of SCD.08.05 or Opal Sigma kaolin in animal feed can be expected to provide benefits in mycotoxin absorption, reduced energy or greater throughput at the cubing process and as a binder.
